The work of the Guastavino Fireproof Construction Company is celebrated throughout the United States for its decorative, structural tile vaults and domes, which are integral to the design of hundreds of monumental buildings found in 40 states across the country. Lightweight, fireproof, economical, capable of spanning massive spaces, and beautiful to look at, Guastavino vaults have stood the test of time--of the thousands the company constructed between 1885 and 1862, not one has ever structurally failed.
When Rafael Sr. and his son emigrated from Barcelona in 1881, they brought a traditional building technique and successfully applied it to the monumental architecture being produced across the United States at the time. Here in New York, their work can be found in the Oyster Bar and the Whisper Gallery at Grand Central Terminal, the Registry Room at Ellis Island, the Bronx Zoo Astor Court, Customs House, the City Hall subway station, and the Municipal Building, to name just a few.
There will be time for questions.
